Tras muchos a\u00f1os de silencio, el 4 de Mayo la banda industrial Sulpher<\/strong> volv\u00eda a los escenarios en el Purple Turtle en Londres, no s\u00f3lo tocando temas de su m\u00e1gnifico Spray <\/strong><\/em>(del cu\u00e1l ya hablamos aqu\u00ed<\/a>), sin tambi\u00e9n presentando nuevos temas de la continuaci\u00f3n de su debut. SuicideByStar<\/strong> no se pod\u00eda perder semejante evento, siendo Sulpher<\/strong> la banda fetiche de una parte del staff. Ya hablaremos del concierto, pero pudimos hablar un rato con Rob Hollyday (l\u00edder de grupo) y esto fue lo que nos cont\u00f3:<\/p>\n

SuicideByStar<\/strong><\/span>: Bueno, como he llegado tard\u00edsimo no me he tra\u00eddo nada. Quer\u00eda haber preparado algo pero acabaremos haciendo una especie de di\u00e1logo\/conversaci\u00f3n que supongo que valga.

\nSBS<\/strong><\/span>: Mmm, deber\u00eda… S\u00ed. Bueno, primera pregunta \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 tanto tiempo?
\nRH<\/strong><\/span>: \u00bfEntre los \u00e1lbums? B\u00e1sicamente Monti fue padre. tuvo un beb\u00e9, y yo me un\u00ed a Prodigy<\/strong>, luego anduve haciendo cosillas con Gary Numan<\/strong>, estuve un a\u00f1o en Marilyn Manson<\/strong>, volv\u00ed a Prodigy<\/strong>… y bueno, ocupado constantemente, girando… Siempre que tuvimos algo de tiempo pens\u00e1bamos en el nuevo \u00e1lbum pero ha sido complicado.
\nSBS<\/strong><\/span>: Recuerdo que en 2005 sac\u00e1steis muestras de un minuto, m\u00e1s o menos, de un pu\u00f1ado de canciones. Le pregunt\u00e9 a Emma J (agente de prensa de Sulpher) por ellas y creo qu\u00e9 pens\u00f3 \u00abMierda, el \u00e1lbum se ha filtrado\u00bb
\nRH<\/strong><\/span>: Nah, \u00a1no, no, no! Lo que pasa es que pens\u00e1bamos que lo \u00edbamos a terminar antes y quer\u00edamos que la gente fuese escuchando un poquito de los temas nuevos en los que est\u00e1bamos trabajando.

Estamos m\u00e1s entre el rock\/industrial\/metal. No creo que est\u00e9 muriendo. Tenemos ah\u00ed a bandas como Machine Head<\/strong>, Pantera<\/strong>, que siguen dando ca\u00f1a.

\nSBS<\/strong><\/span>: No, no. No hablo de popularidad. Digo que los \u00e1lbums de ahora est\u00e1n muy por debajo del nivel de los 90.
\nRH<\/strong><\/span>: Bueno, a veces a la gente se le acaban las ideas, supongo. Tambi\u00e9n intenta adentrarse en diferentes \u00e1reas. No quiere quedarse haciendo el mismo disco una y otra y otra vez, as\u00ed que trata un poco de reinventarse. Lo cual es algo que nosotros mismos estamos intentando hacer. Spray es agresivo, un tanto iracundo… No quer\u00edamos hacer lo mismo otra vez, intentamos ser algo m\u00e1s mel\u00f3dicos, hacer mejores canciones.

\nSBS<\/strong><\/span>: No es que diga nada especialmente pero es una canci\u00f3n en la que todo me encaja a la perfecci\u00f3n, la atm\u00f3sfera me encanta. No hay virtuosismo pero ni falta que hace. A veces aburre.
\nRH<\/strong><\/span>: S\u00ed. Somos bastante b\u00e1sicos. B\u00e1sicos pero efectivos. Hay bandas que s\u00f3lo se dedican a \u00abtiriuriuriuriuriuu\u00bb (imita un solo de guitarra). Por eso siempre me gustaron las bandas que no hacen eso. Una de mis favoritas es Killing Joke<\/strong>. The Cure<\/strong>, Depeche Mode<\/strong> me gustan mucho. Los Nails<\/strong>, Ministry<\/strong>, Skinny Puppy<\/strong> y a ninguna le di\u00f3 nunca por ser muy virtuosa.

\nEmmaJ<\/strong><\/span>: Antes me comentaba que c\u00f3mo con tu\u00a0bagaje\u00a0en Prodigy<\/strong> y Manson<\/strong> no iba a haber una forma sencilla de sacar algo con Sulpher<\/strong>. Sulpher<\/strong> quiere sacar cosas como Sulpher<\/strong> sin ning\u00fan tipo de apadrinamiento por parte de terceros.
\nRH<\/strong><\/span>: Monti y yo empezamos Sulpher<\/strong> antes de que me uniese a ninguna de las otras bandas. Sacamos Spray y giramos con \u00e9l y despu\u00e9s vinieron todas las colaboraciones. Queremos seguir con Sulpher<\/strong> a partir de Sulpher<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSBS<\/strong>: Yeah, it should be… yes, it is. First question: why so much time?
\nRH<\/strong>: Between the albums? Basically, Monti became a father, he had a baby boy, and I joined The Prodigy<\/strong> and… well, I was doing very sort of things… Gary Numan<\/strong>, and then I joined Manson<\/strong> for a year, then came back to Prodigy<\/strong> and… just busy, busy, busy doing that, really. Constantly touring, but you know? whenever we got time off, whenever I had time off, we were constantly recording the new stuff.
\nSBS<\/strong>: I remember that in 2005 you realeased some short samples of a few songs. I asked Emma J<\/strong> (Sulpher\u00b4s press officer) about them and I think she thought \u00abOh, the album\u00b4s been leaked!\u00bb
\nRH<\/strong>: Nah, no, no, no. We thought we\u00b4d get it done quicker than we have done, so we wanted to let people hear a few little songs that we were working on at that time.
\nSBS<\/strong>: Because I remember there was Losing Faith, Take a long hard look, of course…
\nRH<\/strong>: Did you hear us just do that one?
\nSBS<\/strong>: Yeah, I did, actually.
\nRH<\/strong>: Was it loud enough?

\nRH<\/strong>: Yeah, it goes up into a chorus where it\u00b4s got violins and chellos and an orchestra at the end of it.
\nSBS<\/strong>: Yeah, it was quite calm and smooth but you could feel it was also intense, you know?
\nRH<\/strong>: Yeah! It\u00b4s gonna go somewhere. Yeah, it does do that! You will hear it when it\u00b4s…. It\u00b4s finished, it\u00b4s actually finished! But I\u00b4m not gonna let you hear it! Not yet.
\nSBS:<\/strong> A bit of a change in the topic, we are quite interested in your opinion about this: Is industrial metal\/ industrial rock dying?
\nRH<\/strong>: Is it dying? Weeeeeell… Im not sure if it\u00b4s about dying. I mean, I don\u00b4t think that the kind of gothic music is around really anymore but we don\u00b4t consider ourselves a gothic kind of band. It\u00b4s more about rock, industrial, metal,… I dont think it\u00b4s dying, honestly. We have bands like Machine Head<\/strong>, Pantera<\/strong>, well, obviously Pantera<\/strong> aren\u00b4t still around… But, you know? all these kind of bands are still going, are still selling out in huge places, so…
\nSBS<\/strong>: Yeah, but it\u00b4s like if the big names not from metal but the subgenre aren\u00b4t doing too much nor too good on the last few years. You see for example, Marilyn Manson<\/strong> and, obviously, you are not gonna talk shit about MM<\/strong> because you\u00b4ve been working for him…
\nRH<\/strong>:I\u00b4ll talk shit about him, anyway! What do u wanna know? (laughs)
\nSBS<\/strong>: But we\u00b4ve seen Marilyn Manson<\/strong> decaying, now….
\nRH<\/strong>: How do you mean?He\u00b4s not getting… he\u00b4s losing…, he\u00b4s not as popular?
\nSBS:<\/strong> No, it is not about the popularity. It\u00b4s about nowadays\u00b4 albums are not as good as the nineties\u00b4 albums.
\nRH<\/strong>: People run out of ideas, i guess, sometimes. He also tries to go into different areas, he doesn\u00b4t wanna keep making the same record over and over and over again. So he just tries to re-invent himself. Which is a kind of what we wanted to do. You know, Spray is agressive and kinda furious but we didn\u00b4t want to just do the same thing again. We wanted to try to be a more melodic and have some better songs.
\nSBS<\/strong>: It\u00b4s quite hard, if you repeat the formula, fans get angry. If you change too much, fans get angry, so…

\nSBS<\/strong>: Nothing in particular but everything sounds well together, the atmosphere… There isn\u00b4t too much virtuosity but it isn\u00b4t critical not to have it.
\nRH<\/strong>: Yeah, we are quite simple. Basic, but effective. In some bands there is too much \u00abtiriuriuriuriu\u00bb. I\u00b4ve always liked the bands that don\u00b4t do that. One of my favourite bands is Killing Joke<\/strong>. I love The Cure<\/strong>, I love Depeche Mode<\/strong>, the Nails<\/strong>, Ministry<\/strong>, Skinny Puppy,<\/strong> all those bands, and none of them ever do that
\nSBS<\/strong>: What do you think about the last 4 albums of Ministry<\/strong>?
\nRH<\/strong>: (whispers, in order not to get caught on the mic) Crap. (laughs)
\nSBS:<\/strong> That wasn\u00b4t recorded, but I\u00b4ll write it!
\nRH<\/strong>: He\u00b4s actually retired, now, isn\u00b4t he?
\nSBS<\/strong>: He was supposed to be retiring in 2008. I went for their last tour and they basically played thrash stuff plus four of the old classics at the end. It was a little bit frustrating to be a goodbye tour.
\nRH<\/strong>: Did you see them when they had Raven<\/strong> playing bass and Joey Jordison<\/strong> from Slipknot<\/strong> on the drums? That was the last time I saw Ministry<\/strong> and they were really, really good. Tommy Victor from Prong was also with them.
\nSBS:<\/strong> I don\u00b4t really know what else to ask you. It\u00b4s a shame not having brought at least a few questions, you know? some kind of plot…

\nEJ<\/strong>: When he first came he asked me that how was it possible that, with your background with the Prodigy<\/strong> and Manson<\/strong>… But that is your background with Prodigy<\/strong> and Manson<\/strong>, and Sulpher<\/strong> was gonna make it from Sulpher<\/strong>, not because of your links with Prodigy<\/strong> or Manson<\/strong>.
\nRH<\/strong>: Yeah, yeah. Myself and Monti started Sulpher<\/strong> before I played in any of the other bands. We released spray, we were touring it before I joined any other band. And we wanted to keep on as Sulpher<\/strong> from where we left it.<\/p>\n
